Hair appointments have tapered off since January and have now almost completely stopped. Kim has lived in the U.S. for 30 years but still has family in South Korea. She is astonished by the lack of face masks and depleted grocery stores here, as it is not the same in South Korea. In South Korea, she says, people are working together to make sure the curve is flattened. <image:caption>SAN ANTONIO, TX. Students from White Oak HS cheer when their marching band makes finals at the UIL State Marching Band competition. The 3A East Texas high school performed as the only military marching band at the competition. Military marching bands have diminished in popularity compared to corps marching bands – who take the field with props, themed choreography and elaborate attire – making military bands the black sheep of marching band competitions. Despite the odds stacked against them, White Oak made finals, then placed fourth in the competition for 3A schools. For many of the students from the small East Texas school, it was their first time traveling to a big city. The day culminated in excitement, tears and a bittersweet success, as changes to U-I-L’s judging rubric will make it virtually impossible for military bands to compete in the same competition in future years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Born in Japan during the Japanese occupation of Korea, Han Gaseja (한 가세자) returned to her family's home of Jeju Island as a child. Now 81 years old, she started diving when she was 10. She started out collecting foodstuffs from the ocean with other children as a way to pass time and play with other kids. Children did not go to school on Jeju Island at the time. She became a woman diver (famous on Jeju Island), making a living collecting sea urchin, abalone, and other shellfish from the bottom of the ocean. This traditional job was taken on by women beginning around the 17th century, and became a female-dominated profession that requires extreme strength and mental endurance. She became famous for making a traditional Jeju yogurt called soondari or shindari (순다리 or 쉰다리). She is often called Soondari Granny. Today, she also runs the cafe called Sup Island Woman Diver’s Cafe. It is famous mostly for the yogurt drink, and also for a powdered grain drink called misootgaru (미숫가루) and also for seafood ramen. She continues to dive today.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Oakridge</image:title>
<image:caption>Floyd Staley missed his senior all-night party in 1961, the year he graduated high school. Instead, he woke up at 3:30am to meet his ride near Cougar Reservoir, which would take him into the woods for a week of logging for Timber Cutters Inc. at $2 per hour. He proceeded to work 28 years at the Pope and Talbott sawmill just outside Oakridge, meanwhile raising his family, investing in property, and building a life. In 1988, Pope and Talbott responded to outcries over the endangered spotted owl by logging the last of its private timber and shutting down the mill. Today, Staley’s drives past the old industrial site, where the mill was to the burned and scrapped, are ensconced in memories of early mornings, sawdust and the hustle and bustle of a thriving industry.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Oakridge</image:title>
<image:caption>Since then, Staley has watched Oakridge become a quiet town with an economy dependent on the seasonal attention of mountain bikers, hikers – and forest firefighters. During fire season, if the town gets lucky, the forests' flames draw crowds of firefighters to the town, resulting in a temporary economic boost. However, this is not enough to sustain the town year-round, and combined with the increasing threat of forest fires, most of the younger generation has moved away to establish careers elsewhere. Those who remain have established a hardworking lifestyle and tight-knit community built to endure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Staley started recycling metal when he was 14, receiving 32 cents for a pound of copper. He remembers that a candy bar at the time cost 5 cents, and a soda about 10 cents. Retirement has left more time for his to pursue his life-long hobby. He collects scrap metal from local residents to recycle in his spare time. He earns roughly $2.50 per pound now.</image:caption>
